On the Road: 4 Great Day Trips to Take Near Levittown, NY

1. The Sands Point Preserve

The magnificent 216-acre Sands Point Preserve at 127 Middle Neck Road in Sands Point, 18.8 miles from Levittown, once belonged to the Guggenheim family. The grandiose estate with breathtaking gardens, impressive buildings, picturesque woodlands, and a mile-long beach is said to have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, The Great Gatsby.
The exquisite estate is accessed by crossing over a century-old bridge and driving down a tree-lined lane through spectacular formal gardens. You’ll catch glimpses of Castle Gould and Long Island Sound along the way. The estate also includes the impressive Hempstead House and palatial mansions which embody the splendor and opulence of the Gold Coast in the early 20th century.

2. The Queens County Farm Museum

Hit the road to Queens, 21 miles away, to visit the oldest working farm in the state. Queens County Farm on 73-50 Little Neck Parkway spans 47 acres of historic farmland with a lovely vineyard, orchard, herb garden, greenhouse, fields, and livestock.
The farm has been providing fresh produce to New Yorkers for over three centuries, including eggs, dairy products, vegetables, and fleece, sold in shops, restaurants, and farmers’ markets all over the city. The farm holds numerous festivals and events throughout the year.

3. The St. James General Store

Take a 29.5-mile drive to St. James to shop at the oldest general store in the United States. The St. James General Store at 516 Moriches Road was opened by Ebenezer Smith in 1875 in the heart of what was then St. James’ business district. The store, also home to the post office, was a lively gathering place for the town’s residents and supplied them with everything from tobacco and kitchenware to horseshoes and medicine.
It was also here where the town’s parties and dances were hosted upstairs. Today, the popular store still sells a wide variety of goods and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

4. Long Island Aquarium

Spending a day at the Long Island Aquarium at 431 East Main Street in Riverhead is well worth the 53-mile drive from Levittown. The museum’s indoor and outdoor displays feature critters from all over the planet, from cuttlefish, enormous Pacific octopi, and piranha to penguins, seals, and thousands of butterflies.
If you feel adventurous, there are plenty of thrilling adventures, such as boarding the Atlantis Explorer for a two-hour cruise along the Long Island waterways, diving with sharks, snorkeling, and riding in a submarine simulator.
